Northeast Grocery Inc. (NGI), the parent company of Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Markets LLC, has announced an innovative partnership with New York State Industries for the Disabled Inc. (NYSID). This collaboration is set to create administrative job opportunities for individuals with disabilities, opening avenues for these talented individuals to work in integrated settings while receiving competitive wages.
The agreement will initially lead to the creation of around 20 positions in janitorial and mail fulfillment services at NGI’s Schenectady and Buffalo locations. Notably, this move emphasizes community support and corporate responsibility, as highlighted by Mike Miller, EVP at NGI, who stated that their commitment revolves around fostering personal and professional growth for everyone, particularly those with unique skillsets.
NYSID’s member agencies are pivotal in providing vital support services aimed at improving employment rates among people with disabilities. The current unemployment rate in this demographic is alarmingly high at 67%. By partnering with organizations like NYSID, NGI aims to reduce this figure significantly, thus enhancing community well-being across New York State.
Both Price Chopper and Tops Markets have decades of experience in improving job and training opportunities for people with disabilities. Through programs like Price Chopper’s Hiring Advantage, individuals can gain hands-on experience in various jobs, ultimately helping them to identify career paths that align with their aspirations.
The expansion of this partnership, which includes a plan for a custom apparel business operated by a NYSID member agency, illustrates the potential for innovative collaboration in corporate responsibility. By integrating diverse talents into their workforce, NGI is setting a benchmark for inclusivity in the grocery sector, aiming not just for economic gains but also for social impact.
This initiative exemplifies how businesses can lead by example, not only enhancing their own operations through diverse perspectives but also contributing to a more equitable society. Whether through direct employment or the creation of supportive work environments, corporate entities have a significant role to play in shaping a future where everyone has a chance to thrive.
