Several food retailers have earned recognition on People’s 2024 “Companies That Care” list, underscoring their commitment to employees, communities, and the environment. This yearly compilation celebrates U.S. companies that excel in business while demonstrating exceptional respect and concern for their stakeholders. Compiled in collaboration with Great Place to Work, this list analyzes responses from over 8.2 million employees about how their workplaces have positively influenced their lives.

The criteria for this prestigious listing not only reflect employee satisfaction but also assess the generosity of each firm’s employee benefits and their philanthropic outreach, particularly activities from the preceding year. Companies like Wegmans Food Markets, Sheetz Inc., and Publix Super Markets exemplify the best practices aimed at making a tangible difference in society.

Wegmans Food Markets topped the food retail category, ranking No. 7 overall on the list. A notable initiative this year was their “Fill the Bus/Fill the Backpack” campaign launched in June. This effort aims to provide school-aged children with reliable access to nutritious food during the summer months when they often lose access to free and reduced-price school lunches. By utilizing checkout scans, Wegmans raised funds for 48 Feeding America food bank partners, significantly aiding summer feeding programs.

Sheetz Inc., a popular convenience store operator, secured the No. 9 position on this year’s list. Following closely behind, Publix Super Markets claimed the No. 15 spot. The commitment to community service and employee welfare resonates deeply with Publix’s ethos. “We’re honored to be recognized as a company focused on taking care of others,” remarked Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous. The history of service initiated by founder George Jenkins more than 90 years ago continues to influence the company’s operations today. In 2024, Publix enhanced its paid time off for associates, reinforcing its dedication to employee well-being. An environmental campaign in April raised over $2.3 million to protect natural resources, further demonstrating their active engagement in sustainability efforts.

Other recognized food retailers included Nugget Market Inc. at No. 17 and Target Corp. at No. 42. Target implemented a sustainability measure through its “Target Forward” strategy, which successfully eliminated 50 tons of plastic waste, indicating the critical role of sustainability in modern retail practices. By removing unnecessary markers from packaging, such as zippers on chip bags, Target not only cut its operational costs but also significantly contributed to environmental preservation.

Walmart Inc., known for its investment in community safety, landed at No. 50 on the list. In June, they introduced disaster response mobile units operated by nonprofit organizations. These units provide essential services like charging stations, hot meals, and Wi-Fi access to communities in need following natural disasters. This initiative highlights the importance of innovative, community-focused solutions that align with corporate responsibility.

As for overall performance in the grocery business, Wegmans ranked No. 39 on Progressive Grocer’s 2024 list of top food and consumables retailers across North America. Sheetz followed closely at No. 40, while Publix secured the No. 12 position on the same list. Other notable rankings included Target at No. 7 and Walmart at the top spot at No. 1, illustrating the competitive landscape of retail giants committed to social responsibility.
