AutoStore Unveils Subzero Robots for Grocery Fulfillment

by Valery Nilsson

In a significant leap for automated grocery fulfillment, AutoStore has introduced a cutting-edge automated fulfillment system specifically designed for sub-zero temperatures. This new Multi-Temperature Solution allows retailers to efficiently manage the increasing demand for online grocery orders while ensuring that fresh, chilled, and frozen items can be stored and retrieved seamlessly. This advancement eliminates the need for warehouse workers to endure harsh temperatures, enhancing both safety and efficiency in the picking process.

The Multi-Temperature Solution is particularly innovative because it can accommodate multiple temperature zones within a single AutoStore cube. Specifically engineered for environments ranging from -13°F for frozen goods to +42.8°F for chilled items, this system allows operators to pick frozen products in a more comfortable environment, dramatically improving the working conditions in fulfillment centers. The design minimizes the challenges associated with freezing temperatures, ensuring that productivity does not suffer due to the need for employees to retrieve items directly from extreme conditions.

However, AutoStore’s innovations do not stop there. Accompanying the Multi-Temperature Solution are several new grid capabilities designed to bolster operational efficiency. Among these is the expanded 18-Level Grid, which increases storage capacity significantly. By extending the vertical reach of the AutoStore Grid from 16 to 18 levels for 330-millimeter bins and up to 26 levels for 220-millimeter bins, fulfillment centers can achieve enhanced storage density of up to 12.5%. This means a more compact warehouse design that does not compromise on accuracy or flexibility, further optimizing the workflow in storage and retrieval operations.

Safety is also a key focus of AutoStore’s latest advancements. The introduction of the Motorized Service Vehicle offers enhanced maneuverability for maintenance tasks on the grid, a critical feature for facilities managing extensive setups. This vehicle prioritizes worker safety while enabling operators to perform routine checks and maintenance with ease. Importantly, this tool underscores the company’s commitment to developing systems that not only improve speed and efficiency but also safeguard the workforce.

In another stride towards better efficiency, enhancements to the cube control software allow for proactive problem resolution. Users can now address potential operational issues even during non-peak hours, transforming unexpected disruptions into manageable planning opportunities. This capability minimizes downtime and maximizing throughput in busy fulfillment environments.

“The introduction of our Multi-Temperature Solution represents a major milestone in grocery logistics as it opens up new use cases for our systems,” noted Parth Joshi, CPO at AutoStore. “We are continually pushing the boundaries of what automated fulfillment can achieve, striving for improvements that not only benefit our bottom line but also enhance user experiences across the board.”

AutoStore’s innovations come at a time when the grocery industry is facing unprecedented challenges linked to rising online demand. In just a few short years, consumers have grown accustomed to the convenience of ordering groceries online, necessitating fast, reliable Fulfillment solutions. AutoStore’s technologies, which are already operational in 57 countries across approximately 1,550 systems, are expected to deliver scalable results for retailers looking to improve their logistics strategies.

To further discuss these new advancements, AutoStore will outline its growth strategies at the upcoming Capital Markets Day set for September 18 in Manchester, UK. With established offices in numerous countries, AutoStore is uniquely positioned to cater to the global grocery market’s evolving needs.

As grocery retailers continue to adapt to modern shopping habits, the importance of integrating automated solutions like AutoStore’s cannot be overstated. With tools designed to not only enhance operational efficiency but also improve employee safety and work conditions, AutoStore sets a robust example for how technology can solve complex supply chain challenges.

In conclusion, the introduction of AutoStore’s Multi-Temperature Solution and its accompanying innovations signify a transformational shift in grocery fulfillment. Retailers leveraging these advancements will not only meet current demands but also position themselves as leaders in an increasingly competitive landscape.
