Kroger Boosting Efficiency, Labor Productivity With New CFC Technology

The Kroger Co. is set to significantly enhance productivity across its customer fulfillment centers (CFCs) through the integration of advanced technology from Ocado Group. This partnership aims to implement a variety of automated technologies in both existing and future CFCs, which will lower operational costs and improve service efficiency.

One highlight of this initiative is Ocado Group’s On-Grid Robotic Pick (OGRP), a robotic system designed to optimize order picking. Utilizing advanced machine vision and deep reinforcement learning, OGRP can accurately pick from a selection of up to 50,000 products, ensuring efficient packing into delivery bags. This not only streamlines workflow but also enhances accuracy, reducing the potential for human error.

Additionally, the Automated Frameload (AFL) technology automates the loading of packed orders onto delivery frames, minimizing human involvement during this process. By employing computer vision to assess the dimensions of totes and dynamically adjust loading angles, AFL guarantees precise alignment and effective load management.

Kroger operates with nearly 420,000 employees, serving over 11 million customers daily through an array of retail outlets and digital platforms. The grocer’s ranking—No. 4 on the PG 100 list of top North American food retailers—underscores its commitment to staying at the forefront of retail innovation. As a company recognized as a Retailer of the Century, Kroger is poised to continue leading the industry with these technological advancements, reshaping how grocery delivery operates across the U.S.
