Meijer Reveals 2024 Legacy Awards Recipients

In a remarkable celebration of dedication and community service, Meijer has announced the recipients of its 2024 Legacy Awards, recognising the outstanding contributions of its associates. These awards serve as a tribute to the company’s values, instilled by its late co-founder Fred Meijer, and signify a commitment to excellence and innovation within the team.

The Legacy Awards comprise two prestigious recognitions: the Fred Meijer Award and the Earl Holton President’s Award. The Fred Meijer Award, the pinnacle of recognition for a Meijer associate, is awarded annually to an individual who exemplifies the core values of humility, generosity, and a passion for serving others. This year’s recipient is Regional VP Maureen Mitchell, a testament to her influence and impact over her impressive 15 years with the company.

Hank Meijer, Executive Chairman of Meijer, emphasised the familial aspect of the company, stating, “As a family-owned company, Meijer not only treats our team as family but works to uphold the values that have made us who we are for the past 90 years.” This statement reflects an organizational culture that prioritizes both individual achievement and community well-being.

Maureen Mitchell stands out not only as an effective leader but also as a mentor and community advocate. Her efforts have propelled numerous colleagues into successful careers, fostering a culture of growth and support within the organization. Mitchell’s accolades also include being recognised three times as one of Progressive Grocer’s Top Women in Grocery, underscoring her dedication and leadership in the industry.

Alongside Mitchell, five additional associates received the Earl Holton President’s Award. This award highlights a select group of team members who demonstrate the values of leadership, excellence, and innovation as exemplified by Meijer’s former president, Earl Holton. The 2024 winners include:

Blaine Bishop, Associate ITS Manager
Candy Tam, Logistics Manager
Ethan Thomas, Store Director
Cassie Walker, Supply Chain Pharmacy Tech
Monica Wyant, Produce Business Manager

Rick Keyes, President and CEO of Meijer, noted the unique nature of the Legacy Awards, stating, “The Legacy Awards are unique because the nominations come from coworkers who see these team members in action every day. Their passion and dedication fuel our success and make Meijer a special place to work.” This peer-nominated process not only fosters community spirit but also ensures that those who are truly impactful are recognized.

Meijer’s commitment to its associates extends beyond awards. The company operates over 500 supercenters, neighborhood markets, and Meijer Grocery locations across six states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. With its headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Meijer has established itself as a significant player in North America’s retail landscape. It is ranked No. 23 on Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of the top food and consumables retailers and has been featured as one of its Retailers of the Century and Most Sustainable Grocers for 2024.

The Legacy Awards serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of employees in any organization. Creating a workplace culture that values teamwork, leadership, and community service can significantly enhance overall morale and productivity.

As we observe the impact of companies like Meijer, it becomes evident that fostering a nurturing environment for employees not only benefits the individuals involved but also results in a more cohesive and effective organization, dedicated to serving its customers and communities effectively.
