Popular Japanese Grocer Entering San Francisco’s East Bay

Tokyo Central Expands to San Francisco’s East Bay

Tokyo Central, a well-known Japanese grocery chain, is set to open its new location in the Bay Street Emeryville development shortly. This supermarket, owned by Pan Pacific Retail Management (PPRM), aims to fulfill the growing demand for authentic Japanese food and lifestyle products in Northern California.

Soon to launch in 2025, the store will feature a comprehensive selection of premium imported Japanese goods including groceries, made-to-order food trays, health products, and specialty items. A notable addition will be an upscale restaurant, offering fresh and authentic Japanese cuisine to patrons. Kazuhiro Matsumoto, president of PPRM USA, emphasized this store as a “one-stop destination for Japanese specialty food and lifestyle items,” catering to a diverse community in Emeryville.

Scott Bohrer, VP of development for Bay Street Emeryville, expressed enthusiasm about Tokyo Central’s integration into the newly redesigned area, which is envisioned to enhance the cultural shopping experience.

Established in 1965, Tokyo Central has a legacy as one of the first international Japanese retailers in the U.S., operating 12 stores in California and one in Hawaii. The Bay Street location will represent the chain’s second outlet in Northern California, signaling a strategic expansion aimed at enriching the local food landscape.

As consumers increasingly seek unique grocery options, the entrance of Tokyo Central is well-timed. The combination of authentic offerings and a distinctive shopping experience positions this new store as a valuable asset to the community and a compelling choice for food enthusiasts in the East Bay.
