Venafi, a leader in machine identity management, conducted a survey of 800 security decision-makers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The results indicate a critical appreciation for the challenges that accompany the rapid adoption of AI in coding practices. Notably, 83% of organizations currently utilize AI technologies for programming tasks, while 61% report using open source software in their applications.

With such a swift evolution in development processes, security teams are feeling the pressure. The research shows that 66% of leaders admit that it is impossible for their security teams to keep up with the pace set by AI-enabled developers. This inability to maintain pace not only heightens vulnerabilities but also raises the specter of increasing cyberattacks as organizations deploy AI-generated code.

The implications of these findings cannot be understated. A striking 78% of survey participants believe that AI-generated code will lead to a “security reckoning,” suggesting a turning point where the weaknesses of utilizing AI in development will become glaringly evident. Additionally, 59% of these leaders express that they frequently lose sleep over the security implications posed by AI code writing practices. The growing reliance on such technologies raises questions about the efficacy of traditional security protocols, which may not be equipped to handle the unique challenges posed by AI systems.

The challenge is particularly pronounced concerning open source software. While 90% of security leaders expressed trust in open source code, an overwhelming 86% acknowledge that speed often trumps security best practices. Alarmingly, 75% stated that verifying the security of every line of open source code is an impossible task. This mindset presents a considerable risk, given that many organizations depend heavily on open source software components to accelerate development cycles.

Kevin Bocek, Venafi’s Chief Innovation Officer, reflects on these findings, stating, “Security teams are stuck between a rock and a hard place in a new world where AI writes code. Developers are already supercharged by AI and won’t give up their superpowers.” With increasing criminal infiltration targeting software development processes, the need for an effective response strategy has never been greater.

As we consider potential solutions to these challenges, one vital recommendation emerges: a robust code signing process. Venafi’s research underscores the importance of establishing a strong chain of trust through rigorous code verification practices. Code signing not only ensures that software originates from a credible source but also prevents unauthorized code execution—a crucial factor when dealing with AI-generated code that could come from numerous, less-secure environments.

Bocek elaborates on the importance of code signing, asserting that it represents a foundational line of defense in today’s dynamic development landscape. “In a world where AI and open source are as powerful as they are unpredictable, code signing becomes a business’ foundational line of defense,” he points out. Ensuring that each line of code is authenticated and validated through digital signatures is central to retaining the integrity of software and maintaining organizational security standards.

Developers must not become overly reliant on AI to the point where coding standards erode. Regular quality checks for AI-generated code, as well as strict oversight of any outdated or poorly maintained open source libraries, are necessary to counterbalance the risks.
