Big Y Foods has welcomed Megan L. Moriarty as its new director of Meat & Seafood, succeeding the retiring Norm E. Vernadakis. This leadership change marks a pivotal moment for the company, as Moriarty has been a part of Big Y since 2015, beginning her career as a store director. Her ascent through various roles, including floral sales manager and seafood sales manager, showcases her extensive experience in retail operations, which spans over two decades.
Moriarty’s reputation is bolstered by notable recognitions, including being honored as one of the Top Women in Grocery by Progressive Grocer in 2020 and receiving the Food Retail Leader Certificate from the Food Marketing Institute in 2021. “Megan’s visionary leadership and strategic thinking are integral to driving continued success in her new role,” said John Fraro, senior director of Fresh Foods.
As Vernadakis retires after a 39-year career in the meat and seafood industry, his legacy as a mentor and a guide will be missed. He began his journey at Big Y in 1985, advancing through various critical roles that shaped the company’s direction.
Founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, Big Y Foods is among the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, operating across Massachusetts and Connecticut and employing around 12,000 associates. Recognized as No. 74 on Progressive Grocer’s 2024 list of North America’s top food retailers, Big Y remains committed to high standards in its product offerings and customer service.
