Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. has recently expanded its recall of deli meats following a deadly outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to its Strassburger Brand Liverwurst. Initially, on July 25, the company recalled liverwurst due to concerns of contamination. New findings revealed that a sample from the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain, which has severely impacted 34 individuals across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths.
The recall now encompasses an astounding 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products produced at the Jarratt, Virginia facility. This is a significant escalation from the previous recall of over 200,000 pounds. The affected products include both packaged meats and items meant for slicing at retail delis, with “sell by” dates extending from July 29, 2024, to October 17, 2024.
Distribution of the contaminated products was extensive, reaching retail locations nationwide and even extending to exports to countries including the Cayman Islands, Mexico, and Panama. The visible “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” establishment number on the labels marks those that are under precaution.
Listeria is particularly dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations like pregnant women, elderly adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include severe gastrointestinal issues, fever, and in some cases, neurological effects. The USDA advises retailers to follow rigorous cleaning protocols to minimize contamination risks.
In response to the gravity of the situation, Boar’s Head expressed profound regret, emphasizing its commitment to the safety and quality of its products. Consumers are strongly cautioned to dispose of or return any recalled items for a full refund, highlighting the critical nature of addressing food safety concerns head-on.
