Dollar General is demonstrating a strong commitment to its community following a tragic incident nearly a year ago at its Kings Road store in Jacksonville, Florida. In response to a racially motivated shooting that claimed three lives, including a 19-year-old employee, the retailer has allocated over $2.5 million towards community healing initiatives. These initiatives focus on revitalization, education, mental health support, and hunger relief.

One significant step taken by Dollar General was partnering with local food banks to supply approximately 400 Thanksgiving meals and other essential items during food distribution events. Furthermore, the company has initiated a scholarship program through its role as a corporate sponsor of Edward Waters University, aimed specifically at benefiting students from underrepresented communities in the area.

After renovating the Kings Road store, Dollar General reopened it in January 2024, featuring an updated design that includes fresh produce and enhanced food options. A permanent plaque now honors the lives lost in the shooting, symbolizing community resilience with the motto #JacksonvilleStrong. As part of ongoing support, an additional $200,000 will be awarded to local non-profits in August 2024.
