GrubMarket Acquires Largest Asian Squash Provider in U.S.

GrubMarket has made a significant move in the food supply chain sector by acquiring Best Oriental Produce, the largest Asian squash provider in the United States. This acquisition, announced recently, showcases GrubMarket’s commitment to enhancing its presence in the fresh produce market while leveraging innovative technology solutions.

Based in Vernon, California, Best Oriental Produce has a robust farming operation encompassing 700 hectares across California and Mexico, producing a variety of Asian vegetables year-round. This includes not only Asian squash but also Chinese eggplant, where they lead the global market, shipping over 46,000 cases monthly. Their status as the top importer of young coconuts from Thailand further solidifies their position in the market.

Founded over 35 years ago by Ben Charoensuk, the company has built lasting relationships with major retail chains in California, New York, and beyond. This strong customer loyalty has been instrumental in maintaining profitability throughout its history, a commendable feat in today’s competitive landscape. Post-acquisition, Charoensuk and his experienced management team will continue to lead Best Oriental Produce, ensuring a seamless transition and sustained growth.

GrubMarket CEO Mike Xu emphasized the strategic advantage of this acquisition. Best Oriental Produce’s established supply chains and customer relationships complement GrubMarket’s technology-driven approach, particularly their AI-powered tools designed to optimize inventory management and logistics for wholesalers and distributors.

This acquisition aligns with GrubMarket’s ongoing strategy to expand its footprint in the produce sector. Prior acquisitions included food distribution software company Butter and Performance Produce, enhancing their portfolio and operational capabilities further. With operations spanning the globe, GrubMarket aims to facilitate efficient food supply and distribution systems that meet the increasing consumer demand for fresh produce.

Ultimately, this acquisition not only positions GrubMarket for growth in the fresh produce market, but it also highlights the importance of innovation and technology in modernizing the food supply chain.
