Meijer, the well-known Midwest retailer, is on the lookout for new construction service providers in a strategic move to support its expansion plans for 2025 and 2026. Starting November 1, the retailer will open the door for companies of all sizes to submit applications until November 30. This initiative aims to broaden their pool of construction partners to handle a variety of upcoming projects across their six-state region, which includes Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky.
With an array of construction projects on the horizon, Meijer is eager to partner with firms specializing in a multitude of trades. From earthwork and landscaping to HVAC and electrical services, qualified companies must demonstrate expertise in crucial areas such as paving, concrete work, plumbing, and fire protection among others. “With many upcoming projects under development, we’re excited to continue the expansion of our construction partners and invite companies of all sizes to join our roster,” said Roger Whitford, Meijer’s director of construction. His statement underscores the retailer’s commitment to enhancing customer experience through improved in-store environments.
The opportunity is significant. Meijer’s construction projects range widely in scale, catering to both smaller renovations and large-format supercenters. For instance, just this past July, Meijer celebrated the opening of a 90,000-square-foot location in Noblesville, Indiana—the first Meijer Grocery store outside Michigan. Additionally, three supercenters opened in Ohio and Michigan earlier this year, showcasing the retailer’s growth trajectory.
Moreover, Meijer has strategically aligned with healthcare services, recently launching a full-service retail pharmacy in East Grand Rapids at Corewell Health’s Blodgett Hospital. This strategic partnership indicates Meijer’s growing influence in the community and dedication to providing accessible health solutions alongside grocery retailing.
Carla Hendon, Meijer’s director of supplier inclusion and indirect procurement, emphasized the importance of diversifying their supplier base. “We are dedicated to cultivating a supplier base that reflects our current and future needs,” she explained. The open call for new construction suppliers not only addresses upcoming needs but also represents an opportunity for suppliers to grow and collaborate with one of the Midwest’s leading retail brands.
The collaborations could benefit local construction firms significantly. Take Taylor Brothers Construction Co. in Columbus, Indiana, as a prime example. This company started as a subcontractor working through other general contractors but has since become a direct partner with Meijer. Tyshaun Allen, VP of Taylor Brothers, shared, “Since 2013, we’ve had an incredible journey with Meijer, working on various projects, including signage and fixtures, as well as new stores and remodels.” Allen attributed their growth and quality improvement to Meijer’s unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusion.
For prospective suppliers eager to engage with Meijer, a virtual information session is scheduled for November 13, where details about qualifications and project opportunities will be provided. Companies accepted during this open call will be notified and incorporated into Meijer’s future project communications.
As a privately owned, family-operated business, Meijer operates over 500 stores, including supermarkets and express locations throughout the Midwest. With a workforce exceeding 70,000 associates, Meijer ranks No. 25 on Progressive Grocer’s 2024 PG 100 list, which features North America’s foremost food and consumables retailers. The company has also been recognized as one of the Retailers of the Century and one of the Most Sustainable Grocers for 2024.
For construction service providers, this open call presents a significant opportunity to partner with a well-respected retailer poised for growth in the coming years. Seizing such opportunities and engaging in community-oriented endeavors may not only enhance their business portfolio but also contribute to local economic development.
For those interested, applications are accepted until the end of November, and further details for the virtual session can be found on Meijer’s official website.
