Walgreens Adds Dream Vault Smart Locker in Chicago

In a significant move to enhance health equity and food security, Walgreens has partnered with the nonprofit Dion’s Chicago Dream to introduce Dream Vault smart lockers at their Gage Park location at 55th and Kedzie Avenue. This initiative aims to provide approximately 275 households, translating to around 1,000 residents, in the Chicagoland area with free and high-quality produce each week.

Unveiled by Dion’s Chicago Dream last year, the Dream Vault is a state-of-the-art network-enabled system of lockers designed to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables directly to those in need. Recipients gain access by entering a simple code to retrieve a week’s worth of healthy produce at no cost, underlining a community-centric approach to food distribution.

Dion Dawson, the founder of Dion’s Chicago Dream, shared his motivation behind establishing the Dream Vaults. His experiences as a military veteran facing financial hardships profoundly shaped his mission to ensure that participants in the program do not have to compromise on nutrition for basic necessities like medication. “At one point in my life, I was a returning military veteran struggling to make ends meet,” Dawson stated. “That’s one reason why we put our Dream Vaults in places like Walgreens that provide the goods and services we need to thrive.”

This collaboration with Walgreens marks a vital step towards addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity in Gage Park, where nearly 21% of residents lack reliable access to healthy food options. The newly installed Dream Vault locker commenced operations on October 22, 2024, opening its doors to households within a one-mile radius of the Walgreens store.

This initiative follows the initial launch of the Dream Vault, which made its retail debut in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood at a Save A Lot store.
