Kisanserv Plans to Expand to 250 Stores, Create 6000 Jobs in the Next Four Years

Kisanserv, a retail company that focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables, has set ambitious goals for growth over the next four years, aiming to establish 250 stores and create approximately 6,000 jobs in the process. This expansion represents a significant leap from its initial footprint since its inception in 2019 and its first store opening in January 2023, which has already grown to 22 locations across Pune and Mumbai.

With a revenue target of ₹500 crore, Kisanserv is not just looking to increase store count but is also focused on operational efficiency and bringing in technology to streamline its processes. The company has reported earnings of ₹35 crore in the past fiscal year, with expectations to significantly improve those figures as it scales operations.

Job Creation with a Community Focus

One of the noteworthy aspects of Kisanserv’s expansion is its commitment to job creation. The company aims to generate 2,000 direct jobs and an additional 4,000-5,000 indirect jobs. There is a clear focus on hiring from local communities, with a particular emphasis on prioritizing female staff. This approach not only boosts employment but also aims to empower women within the communities it operates.

Niranjan Sharma, the CEO of Kisanserv, emphasized that their business model is now well-developed and they are poised for rapid growth. Sharma stated, “Our focus on operational efficiency, combined with our commitment to quality and customer service, positions us to capture a significant share of the ₹160 billion fruits and vegetables market in India.”

Operating Model and Market Strategy

Kisanserv operates neighborhood convenience stores, each about 300 square feet, and complements its physical retail presence with an online shopping platform through the Kisanserv Express app. This dual-channel approach allows customers to either shop in-store or order online with home delivery options available within 20-30 minutes at no extra cost. Currently, Kisanserv derives about 70% of its revenue from in-store sales, while online sales contribute the remaining 30%.

This innovative model indicates a keen understanding of both traditional and modern shopping habits. However, Kisanserv isn’t stopping there. The company is investigating the introduction of self-checkout systems to expedite the shopping experience further, catering to the growing consumer preference for efficiency.

Technological Integration and ERP System

A critical component of Kisanserv’s strategy is the use of technology to manage operations effectively. The company has developed a tailored ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system that offers real-time insights into demand, procurement, supply chain logistics, and inventory management across its stores. This has resulted in impressive inventory turnover rates of just 1-2 days, helping to keep food waste remarkably low—limited to 4-5% in stores and around 4% in the supply chain.

Kisanserv’s focus on technology also plays a vital role in its future planning, as the company prepares to introduce cold-pressed juices reflecting a shift towards health-focused consumer preferences. These developments not only align with market trends but also enhance Kisanserv’s product offerings, establishing a unique niche within the crowded retail space.

Future Outlook

As Kisanserv plans to scale up to 1,000 stores, targeting major markets such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, its expansion strategy appears well-thought-out. The goal to increase revenue per square foot from ₹41,000 to ₹65,000 illustrates a focus on maximizing return on investment while capturing a larger market share.

In the rapidly evolving world of e-commerce and retail, Kisanserv’s forward-thinking approach positions it advantageously amidst fierce competition. With its commitment to community-focused job creation, leveraging innovative technology for operational management, and a clear path for expansion, Kisanserv is on track to become a key player in India’s retail landscape.

In conclusion, Kisanserv’s ambition reflects current market demands and consumer behavior, illustrating a model that balances traditional retail methods with modern technological solutions.
