Of the largest online stores in Switzerland, only 17% currently offer free delivery. This figure represents a slight shift from the previous year, where similar trends were observed. According to a recent analysis by Carpathia, an e-commerce management consultancy, the majority—64%—provides free shipping only when a minimum order threshold is met. In contrast, 19% of these retailers consistently charge for delivery, indicating that free shipping remains a rarity.
Delivery practices are evolving, with an increase in stores offering expedited shipping. In fact, the number of online shops providing delivery within 24 hours has jumped from 4% to 17% in just one year. However, a significant 66% of major online retailers still do not provide this quick service, illustrating the challenges and considerations in logistics.
Shipping costs are relatively moderate, averaging €6.85 (6.63 Swiss Francs) across the analyzed stores, down from €7.41 the previous year. This decline may reflect increased competition or improved logistics efficiency. Importantly, the trend of limited free shipping is consistent with findings from the broader DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), where free delivery is often seen as an exception rather than the rule. This is largely attributed to the high costs associated with product returns, which can range between €5 to €10 for sellers in these markets.
As e-commerce continues to mature, consumer expectations around shipping will likely influence future business strategies, particularly in how retailers approach delivery costs and logistics.
