Kris Kowalski Christiansen, the CEO of Kowalski’s Markets, has been recognized as the 2024 Grocer of the Year by the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) during its recent annual meeting in Brainerd, Minnesota. This prestigious title not only highlights her leadership qualities but also continues a family legacy that began with her parents, Mary Anne and the late Jim Kowalski, who founded the business in 1983 and were previous MGA Grocer of the Year winners.
Kowalski Christiansen has played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s operational strategies, including overseeing its expansion and enhancing its private label offerings. Her dedication extends beyond retail, as she actively participates in community initiatives, serving on several boards including the Midwest Active Citizenship Initiative. Since joining the MGA board in 2008, she has held significant positions, including chairperson from 2018 to 2020.
Under her leadership, Kowalski’s Markets continues to thrive, recently opening a new store in Edina, Minnesota, and earning recognition as one of Progressive Grocer’s Top Regional Grocers for 2024. The MGA, which represents the food industry of Minnesota from farm to fork, comprises over 300 members and supports nearly 1,300 locations statewide.
