Wegmans, Publix Among Best Workplaces for Women

Fortune has unveiled its 2024 Best Workplaces for Women list, highlighting notable food retailers that have committed to creating a supportive and equitable environment for female employees. This recognition goes beyond just offering fair pay and promotions. The report emphasizes that organizations must foster a culture where women feel valued, seen, and supported. This approach not only enhances workplace morale but can also significantly impact the bottom line.

The figures from Fortune present compelling evidence of the positive impact of such a workplace culture. At the recognized organizations, an impressive 91% of women expressed a desire to remain long-term, indicating job satisfaction and commitment. Furthermore, 90% reported that they go the extra mile to complete their tasks, and nearly 80% feel their managers involve them in decision-making processes.

Fortune’s list is based on extensive feedback from 1.3 million employees across the United States, with nearly 600,000 being women working in companies certified as Great Places to Work. Among the honored companies, Wegmans Food Markets, based in Rochester, N.Y., secured the 30th position in the large company category. Close on its heels was Sheetz Inc., a convenience store operator from Altoona, Pa., which ranked 33rd. Publix Super Markets from Lakeland, Fla., claimed the 47th spot.

Key leaders in these organizations have shared their views on the significance of promoting a culture of inclusivity. “Publix is dedicated to creating an inclusive work culture where all associates feel valued,” stated Marcy Benton, VP of Associate Experience at Publix. She highlighted that embracing diversity empowers associates, allowing them to reach their full potential. This statement aligns with the overarching theme of the report—that companies that prioritize diversity benefit both their workforce and their overall performance.

Last year, both Publix and Wegmans were also featured on this prestigious list, showcasing a continued commitment to gender equity. According to Fortune Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell, the findings reflect a clear message: these companies have cultivated workplaces where women feel valued and encouraged to excel in their roles.

The statistics from these workplaces are striking as well. For instance, a staggering 81% of women indicated that promotions are awarded to those who truly deserve them, which is 62% higher than at typical workplaces. Moreover, nearly 90% of the women reported that everyone has an opportunity for recognition, showcasing a corporate culture that goes beyond mere acknowledgment. Additionally, 87% of women found personal significance in their work, which is 55% higher compared to their peers in various other workplaces.

Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work, emphasized the principle that everyone should feel appreciated for their contributions and supported in their professional development, regardless of gender. This expectation is increasingly becoming a standard rather than an exception in workplaces striving for equity.

To qualify for inclusion on Fortune’s list, companies must fulfill specific criteria. This includes employing at least 50 women, ensuring that 20% of their nonexecutive managers are women, and having at least one female C-suite executive. Companies are categorized into small and medium (50 to 999 employees) and large (1,000 or more employees) categories.

In parallel with these recognitions, Progressive Grocer is preparing to honor outstanding female professionals in the grocery sector during Grocery Impact in Orlando, Fla. An awards gala will take place on November 8, highlighting the achievements of the 2024 Top Women in Grocery.

The recognition of Wegmans and Publix on Fortune’s Best Workplaces for Women list signifies a strong commitment to gender equity and employee satisfaction within the food retail sector. As they continue to set an example, it is clear that supportive company cultures can lead to happier employees, better retention rates, and ultimately, enhanced business performance.
